Brigid was one of the most widely worshiped deities in Pre-Christian Ireland--a goddess of fire, healing, poetry, smithcraft, fertility and scared wells.

Her devotion and worshipers were so strong and widespread that when Christianity arrived, the church chose not to erase her........The Catholic church Canonized her instead. thus Saint Bridid of Kildare was born.  At Kildare temple, the priestesses of the pagan Brigid tended an enteral flame.  When she became a saint, Christians nuns took over the job, keeping the flame burning for centuries.  The temple was so sacred that no man was allowed inside the fire temple.  The flame was extinguished during the Reformations but was rekindled in the 1990s and still burns today.

The pagan festival, Imbolc (Feb 1), honored the return of spring and the lighting of Bridid's fire.  The Church kept everything the same but renamed it  Saint Brigid's Day.

People still make offerings outside for her--a blend of ancient pagan and Christian practice.  Brigid's presence is one I return to often; her energy weaves through my work, my practice and my creativity.
