FALL FARM UPDATE
This year I am breeding 5 does to a little spotted buck I bought named Odin. He is so beautiful and an array of colors. Currently he is too little to be of much interest but many of the does have come in heat and to their frustration he just looks confused. Give him a couple of months and they will be running, LOL! The rescue....... have you ever met someone with too much on their plate? This is true for the woman I bought Odin and Annabelle from. Annabelle is a wonderful spotted loving doe that decided she wanted to live with me. I actually went to look at her buck kid. He was spotted, healthy and beautiful. Annabelle on the other hand was so thin and hungry, she gave everything to feeding her kids. The owner had placed both animals for me to look at in an abandoned dog run with a dog house full of wasps. Those poor animals were being stung and I discovered this too late as I entered to look over the animals. I was stung, bit and attacked. Anyway, I just couldn't leave Annabelle, I checked her CAE and CL papers and agreed on a price and then Annabelle ran to my car and jumped into a dog crate with her buck kid, Odin. "Wow", was all I said. Annabelle has fit in perfectly and she is so friendly and kind. She has put on weight and is now a shiny healthy, happy beautiful goat. Her buck kid has grown immensely with proper nutrition. I really didn't want another doe but like I said Annabelle was convinced I was the one,so how could I refuse? Maybe I smelled like hay and grain????? Chickens are so much fun. I have decided to raise a heritage breed chicken called, Sussex , and after trying most every kind of chicken available, these have captured my heart. They are beautiful red chickens with white spots that are circled with a black ring that in the sun light shimmers green. They are curious and friendly and are good layers. They amaze me because if it rains or even when irrigating they continue to peck around while everyone else is in the barn. They are the first ones out of the coop (I actually have chickens that sleep in), the rooster is protective but not aggressive. Currently I have a bantam sitting on eggs, and if she leaves for a drink or nibble on food, one of the Sussex steals her nest. It has become a comical feud to me. I believe that the British know their chickens and this may be the perfect breed for me. They are a heavy breed and at four months they are very meaty. After doing some research they are the original Cornish Cross. Cornish Cross are geneticly altered birds that grow so fast that their feathers do not grow and they are ready for butcher in 2 months, amazing. Though convenient, they lack the ability to be a normal chicken and end up sitting in front of the feeders, it is sad and a relief to butcher them. I have ordered 24 little Sussex chicks this fall to raise and then next year hatch eggs and raise my own birds for the freezer. It is my wish that each one of you find happiness in the simple things, have afternoon tea or some personal time and remember to laugh and find something that gives you passion.
May you find balance during the Fall Equinox,
