DID YOU KNOW?
The Cailleach is one of the oldest goddesses in Europe. Her name comes from the Gaelic word "cailleach" meaning "veiled on,", "hag," or "ancient woman". She predates Celtic Christianity and likely stems from Pre-indo-European fertility and earth mother traditions. In folklore she rides the sky on wild animals, either a wolf, wild bore and sometimes a deer. Representing the wild aspects of winter. In different regions she carries a hammer, a wand or a staff that she uses to call in storms. In many tales she has one eye, called "the eye of truth" she sees beyond life and death. The Cailleach is almost always depicted as blue, (blue skin, clothing and hair). Symbolizing frost, ice, shadow and the soul of winter.
A winter Goddess who shaped the land. In folklore, she creates mountains, cairns, and rocky landscapes by dropping stones from her apron as she walks. Many peaks in Ireland and Scotland are believed to be her frozen footprints.
WEATHER LORE
Weather lore says she controls storms, frost, and the length of winter. it is said that on Imbolc (Feb 1) if the day is bright and sunny the Cailleach has gone out to gather firewood--meaning she intends to make the winter longer. If the day is dark and stormy, she is asleep and spring will come soon (In current times the Ground hog is the predictor of when spring will come.) She is a sovereignty goddess controlling the life force of the land itself. Some lore has her as a creator goddess of the world.
Many regions have their own version of her
Ireland, Scotland, and the isle of man all tell stories of the Cailleach, sometimes with different names:
- Cailleach Bhe'ara
- Cailleach Bheur
- Cailleach ny Groamagh
FEARED AND HONORED
Through she is fierce, cold and uncompromising, she is also a protector of land, a guardian of animals, and a keeper of sacred places. She embodies the truth that winter is not a punishment---but necessary rest, cleansing, and renewal.
WHEN SHE RULES
The Cailleach is said to hold power from Samhain (Nov1) to Imbolc (Feb1). At Imbolc she either:
- is replaced by Brigid ( her youthful aspect),
- transforms into a young woman again. Symbolizing springs return
This links her to the cycle of death-rest-rebirth and she is often depicted as a triple goddess aspect (Maiden, Mother, Crone)
